Abstract

Abstract . This study explores the concept of fasad (environmental destruction) in Buya Hamka’s thought as presented in Tafsir al-Azhar, focusing on its relevance to contemporary environmental issues. The main problem examined is how Buya Hamka interprets Qur’anic verses about ecological damage and how his ideas contribute to the development of Islamic environmental theology. Using a qualitative method with an intellectual analysis approach, this study relies on Tafsir al-Azhar as the primary source and relevant scholarly works as supporting materials. The findings show that Buya Hamka perceives environmental destruction not merely as a technical matter but as a moral and spiritual crisis. As God’s khalifah, humans bear the responsibility to preserve nature’s balance, while greed and weakened monotheistic values (tawhid) become the roots of ecological corruption. Hamka also criticizes modern development driven by materialism and neglecting spirituality. It concludes that Hamka’s interpretation offers an eco-theological message emphasizing that environmental preservation must begin with moral and spiritual renewal.
