Abstract

The research discusses the theory of psychological hermeneutics by Schleiermacher and its application in one of the exegesis books during the Tabi'in period. The method of psychological hermeneutics is one of the approaches proposed by Schleiermacher to interpret the meanings contained in a text. This method obliges an interpreter to detach their subjectivity as an interpreter by exploring the psychological aspects of the author and audience at the time the text was revealed. Consequently, it becomes possible to discover a true understanding of the text as understood by the author and audience of the text. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach to various literature, including books, journals, articles, and notes from previous research. The collected data are then analyzed and described. The aim of this research is to analyze the use of psychological hermeneutics theory in Mujahid's interpretation. The findings of this research reveal that Mujahid, as an early interpreter, applied the theory of psychological hermeneutics to understand the meaning of the word 'qiradah.' This is evident from Mujahid's consideration of the narratives provided by the direct audience of the revelation of the Quran. Additionally, he examined words in the text that are relevant to this verse. The result is that in Surah Al-Baqarah 65, the term 'qiradah' is interpreted as a consumption that affects the heart and behavior, similar to monkeys, rather than a change in their physical form.
