Abstract

This study explores the meaning and significance of the concepts of gratitude (syukr) and patience (ṣabr) in the Qurʾān, focusing on Surah Ibrāhīm [14]:5 through the Maʿna cum Maghza approach. The verse presents the narrative of the spiritual and social liberation of the Children of Israel by Prophet Mūsā (Moses) from darkness into light, in which Allah explicitly commands the remembrance and proclamation of ayyām Allāh (the days of Allah). In this context, syukr and ṣabr function not merely as inner dispositions but as theological, psychological, and historical pillars of resilience for the believers in facing trials and the dynamics of life. The Maʿna cum Maghza approach enables a deeper understanding of the verse beyond linguistic analysis and classical exegesis by incorporating macro-historical context and contemporary relevance. The findings reveal that in this verse: First, al-Maʿnā al-Tārīkhī, the term Syakūr is an intensive form of syukr, meaning to remember and manifest divine blessings. A Syakūr servant is one who shows profound gratitude for Allah’s favors not only fulfilling obligatory duties but also engaging in voluntary acts of worship as expressions of thankfulness. Meanwhile, Ṣabbār, derived from the intensive form of ṣabr, refers to one who steadfastly endures in accordance with reason and divine law. It signifies a person capable of maintaining patience through hardships and inner struggle. Second, al-Maghzā al-Tārīkhī indicates a recurring pattern throughout history there will always be moments requiring patience in times of adversity and gratitude in times of ease. Third, al-Maghzā al-Mutaharrik al-Muʾassir highlights that the two key traits Ṣabbār and Syakūr serve as spiritual filters; only those who remain steadfast in patience during trials and sincere in gratitude upon receiving blessings can truly perceive Allah’s signs within the events of history and the experiences of life.
