The issue of environmental damage is a global problem that threatens the sustainability of human life. The phenomenon of deforestation, water pollution and massive exploitation of natural resources shows the gap between humans' destructive behavior towards nature and Islamic teachings which emphasize the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance as a divine mandate (hifz al-bi'ah). This article aims to analyze the concept of environmental conservation in QS. al-A'raf verse 56 through a maqasidi interpretation approach, namely an approach that seeks to explore the objectives and basic values of the Shari'a (maqasid al-syari'ah) in the text of the Al-Qur'an. Using qualitative methods based on library research, this research examines various classical and contemporary tafsir literature to reveal the relevance of maqasid values, especially the principles of hifz al-nafs, hifz al-nasl, and hifz al-bi'ah in the context of Islamic ecological ethics. The research results show that QS. al-A'raf verse 56prohibits physical damage (facade), and emphasizes the moral and spiritual dimensions in maintaining the sustainability of life. From the perspective of tafsir maqasidi, Ashl from the understanding of maqashid in this verse is the prohibition on causing damage (fasad) in general and universally covering all forms of damage, whether moral, social or environmental. Environmental preservation is understood as an integral part of the realization of maqasid al-syari'ah to realize universal benefit (maslahah 'ammah). Besides that, QS. al-A'raf 56 is at the primary level (adh-dharuriyyat), which is the basis for realizing the overall goals of the Shari'a and contains a transformative message so that the ecotheological awareness of Muslims is implemented in real ecological action.
